It’s summer and I have a big bowl of fresh cherries sitting in my fridge. Trying to think of what to make with them, my mind immediately goes to something sweet like cherry bars. But then I thought how about something savory and that’s when grilled cheese popped into my head.
I love an elevated grilled cheese and this combination is a keeper.
Cherry Gouda Grilled Cheese
Ingredients
- 2 slices whole wheat bread
- 2 tsp butter
- 1/2 c shredded gouda cheese
- 6 cherries (halved and pit removed)
- pinch of salt
Directions
- Butter one side of each piece of bread.
- Heat pan over medium heat. Add one slice of bread to pan butter side down.
- Add cheese, cherries, and a pinch of salt on top of bread.
- Place other slice of bread on top butter side up.
- Cover pan with lid (or aluminum foil) to help cheese melt.
- Flip when first side is golden brown and cook other side until golden brown.
Notes
- Bread: Sourdough bread would also be delicious with this grilled cheese.
- Cheese: I buy a bag of shredded gouda, but fresh grated cheese is always best. Also, have fun trying different cheeses (mozzarella, brie)
- Add ins: I think some fresh sage would take this to the next level. This is on my list to try!
